چکیده

The work presented here is part of a larger project directed toward a better understanding of the influence of timbre variations upon musical expressiveness. To address such an issue, we have limited our study to the relationship between the physics and playing of the clarinet, and the generated timbre. This reduction of the problem is justified by the fact that the clarinet is a physically well understood instrument, leading to an efficient synthesis model which can be run in real-time. Such a physical knowledge is of great importance since it allows the design of specific timbre descriptors adapted to this instrument and points out the most important control parameters the musician can act on. After a brief description of the physics of the clarinet, we show how specific timbre descriptors can be derived from classical ones and how the control of the instrument acts on the perceived sound.

Influence of Non-Uniform Wall Temperature on Local Heat Transfer Coefficient in a Rotating Square Channel

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental examination of the effect of non-uniform wall temperature on local heat transfer coefficient in a rotating smooth-walled square channel. Three different thermal boundary situations were investigated: (a) even and odd (four) wall uniform temperature, (b) even and odd (four) wall uniform heat flux, and (c) even (leading and trailing) w...

The effect of Timbre in Clarinet Interpretation

The perceptual importance of timbre variations was investigated in clarinet expressive music performance. Three basic transformations acting on timbre, rhythm and dynamics and four combinations of them were applied to solo clarinet recordings in order to remove or flatten some of the expressive variations of the performer. Twenty skilled musicians were asked to choose the interpretations they p...

Musical Signal Analysis Using Fractional-delay Inverse Comb Filters

A novel filter configuration for the analysis of harmonic musical signals is proposed. The method is based on inverse comb filtering that allows for the extraction of selected harmonic components or the background noise component between the harmonic spectral components. A highly accurate delay required in the inverse comb filter is implemented with a high-order allpass filter. The paper shows ...

Influence of pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of instrument dynamics.

The effect of variations in pitch, loudness, and timbre on the perception of the dynamics of isolated instrumental tones is investigated. A full factorial design was used in a listening experiment. The subjects were asked to indicate the perceived dynamics of each stimulus on a scale from pianissimo to fortissimo. Statistical analysis showed that for the instruments included (i.e., clarinet, fl...

Instruments Matching via Timbral Features

In the paper the problem of matching instruments according to their timbral similarity is considered for a collection of 53 high quality violins. The fact that the instruments are of the same type makes the subject particularly challenging. The starting point of the analysis is calculation of a set of features based on harmonic analysis, e.g. odd-to-even harmonics amplitudes ratio, intensity of...
